Simone Taddei: Maestro of Florence
An Italian artisan of the first order, Simone Taddei is the third generation of a family business dedicated to producing exquisite leather articles completely by hand. Taddei’s talent and perfectionism is exceeded only by his warmth and graciousness.
Simone’s workshop on Via Santa Margherita, a stone’s throw from Florence’s famous Piazza Signoria, smells of leather and wood and like all places of great creativity, is enchantingly messy and atmospheric (see Simone’s feature in the New York Times Magazine).
Simone and his family have been making fine leather objects since 1937. His grandfather Otello and his father Giampaolo began the work that Simone now sees as his own life’s calling. Simone uses the same tools, the same forms and the same benchwork that have been used from the beginning.
Taddei’s production includes leather boxes, eyeglass cases, business card holders (all available from EyeItalia) along with picture frames, cigar holders, change purses and desk sets. All are produced with meticulous attention to detail. As Simone says, when something is devoid of ornamentation, “it has to be perfect”.
These beautifully rendered objects give pleasure to the eye and joy to the touch. Whether used solely as decorative objects or for practical use, Taddei’s creations will delight anyone who sees them. Featured in Louise Fili’s “The Civilized Shopper’s Guide To Florence“, Taddei’s goods are simply “the real thing”.
